Green Design Outdoor Furniture: An Ali Oop For Skate-Park Scraps
What do you get when you cross modern skater-punks and classic Adirondack-style chairs? Green design outdoor furniture manufactured by Loll Designs.
Loll Designs was founded by utilizing scrap material from TrueRide, Inc., a well-respected designer and builder of skateboard parks since 1997. According to their website, in the last 10 years True Ride has constructed over 300 municipal and private skate parks, across the nation and internationally as well.
The phenolic fiber laminate material dubbed Skatelite Pro, used by TrueRide to created super smooth, extremely durable, all-weather skate-park ramps turns out to also be very well suited for making green design outdoor furniture.
The material had gone through extensive performance testing at the Natural Resources Research Institute at the University of Minnesota. Institute scientists showed the Company that it was possible to replace some of their current materials with “lower cost, better looking recycled products”. The outcome – ramps and surfaces that can take the abuse of extreme sports enthusiasts, remains at a comfortable surface temperature in any condition, and won’t rot, rust or warp.
Loll Designs, working out of the same Duluth, Minnesota shop as their sister company, True Ride was formed to design and build using the scrap pieces of Skatelite Pro left over after TrueRide completed the construction of their popular skate-parks. Loll Designs product line has expanded from classic-styled Adirondack chairs fashioned from left-over Skatelite scraps, to a full array of green design outdoor furniture made with 100 percent post-industrial recycled plastic.
Green design outdoor furniture is ideally suited for high-performance green homes, mid-rise projects and affordable housing initiatives. In commercial buildings, the recycled post-consumer material used in Loll’s products exceeds the LEED certification criteria for MR credits 4.1 and 4.2.
According to the U.S.Green Building Council, LEED certification is the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ which “encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.” The U.S.Green Building Council is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community of leaders working to make green buildings available to everyone within a generation.”
